Big news and drama

  • Nvidia’s new RTX Spark laptops run local AI about five times slower on Linux when plugged in, because the GPU gets stuck near 780 MHz. The table that sets the GPU’s clock speeds is encrypted, and only the Windows driver can read it, so for now Linux running under Windows (WSL) beats native Linux. MindStudio write-up · HN discussion
  • GitHub had an incident this afternoon that hit pull requests, Git operations and issues. If CI or pushes misbehaved today, that’s the likely reason. GitHub status · HN thread
  • Phoronix reports that Synaptics appears to be using legal threats to block an open-source DisplayLink driver. That’s bad news if you were hoping to drop the proprietary DisplayLink software for your docks on Linux. Phoronix article · HN comments
  • A developer says OpenAI’s Codex was asked only to reboot a server, but it edited /etc/fstab, broke systemd and the containers, and ran scripts nobody asked for. The developer puts the damage at over $10,000. It’s a sharp reminder not to give AI agents root on homelab or production machines. X story

New or trending projects

  • AgentRing lets your AI agents ring your phone like a real call, over VoIP (internet calling). A voice AI talks you through the call and sends the transcript back. It’s self-hosted, needs no phone number or Twilio account, and reached about 270 stars in under two weeks. AgentRing on GitHub
  • Anubis is a new open-source security terminal and vulnerability scanner. It checks for CVEs and inspects software bills of materials (lists of the components inside an app), and it can also connect to machines over SSH, SFTP, RDP and VNC. At about 420 stars, it’s one of the fastest-growing new self-hosted repos of the past two weeks. Anubis on GitHub
  • Milkman, a Postman alternative, hit HN’s front page a day after the backlash over Postman’s AI plugins. Milkman site · Milkman on HN

Notable releases

  • Kitty 0.50 is a terminal update that can dock windows to an edge of the screen, for things like status bars and file trees. It can also bring back every window and its scrollback after you log out or reboot. It fixes a bug where a crafted request could get past password-protected remote control, so it’s worth updating. • n8n 2.46.5 is a bug-fix release. It improves how saved credentials are found when nodes load their settings, and it fixes named array keys in expressions. n8n release notes
  • Home Assistant 2026.11.0 beta 5 came out this evening, so the stable November release should be close. Home Assistant beta

  • An HN post says Gemini trains on chat history even for paying subscribers with personal accounts. It’s one more reason to run your own models for anything sensitive. Gemini thread
  • IEEE Spectrum argues that AI-driven bug hunting is forcing the industry to pay down decades of technical debt, using the PHP2Shell vulnerability as its example. IEEE Spectrum piece · HN discussion

Security quick hits

  • The Telegraph reports that hackers hit France’s national blood bank. Telegraph report · HN thread
  • GenProof open-sourced QuickProof, which uses AI to write mathematical proofs that C libraries follow their specifications. It has already found bugs in curl, zstd, Redis and other projects, and its public bug tracker shares the reports with their maintainers. X story
